You can find information about how to protect yourself against identity theft on Clark Howard's web site

Scams & Ripoffs
Identity theft,

Miscellaneous Scams,
Money & banking scams,
Resources/Contacts,
Telephone/Telemarketing
We have a credit protection service provided by Equifax. It is a paid service. Following Clark Hoard's advice, you can do it by yourself if you don’t mind spend some time on it.
The paid service can alert you if someone, (including yourself,) has just opened a new account using your SSN, or if balances of your accounts have big changes (you set percentage.) It also provides certain degree of help if you do hit by ID theft, and insurance up to $25,000? (I can’t remember).
By law, in some states under certain condition, you can ‘freeze’ you credit, so ID thieves can’t get credit cards or borrow money under your name.
