how to transfer in the middle a semester

My son is enrolling in one school now. Due to some unexpected reason, maybe we need transfer him to another school. Since now is in the middle of semester, is it a problem? Could there be some rank problem (all full) in the new school? And in this case what we should do for transfer? Is the processing complicated?
Appreciate sharing experience if anyone has.
