got worst after the breakdown of Soviet Union? Back in 1979, Vietnam was backed by Soviet Union to challenge China. In 1980 Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan try to surround China while India was lean toward Soviet Union. China stood alone at the front to confront Soviet Union and its influence without serious support from the West. The north and the west of China were vunlerable to Russian nuclear/missle strikes.
What about today? China formed a solid military alliance with Russia. Northern border is relatively safe and secured. Losing support (both financial and military) from Soviet Union, Both India and Vietnam adopted more realstic foreign policies toward China and the southwestern and western regions are getting stable. While the West still imposes military sanction against China China has alternative ways to obtain advanced weapons from Russia, which greatly upgrades obsolete Chinese arsenal. Can you imagine that Soviet Union would do the same to the Chinese?
I reiterated that the West has never trusted China as long as China is ruled by the Communists. Don't expect the West to treat China much differently even if Soviet Union stands today. They just wanted to seperate two Communist Giants.
