You need to find your transmission code. There are several models.
Assume you have a 96 Legacy with AT. Call this company after you get the code. They have a 96 Legacy auto tranny for $300 with 135k miles on it (tested).

Shipping should be about $100 aross country. You can find a local tranny shop to put it on for $300-$400.
There are many salavge yards sell Subaru trannies...
