Yes, there is a park in downtown, water fountains in front of a river, river cruise, shopping area
At night, you can take tram up the hill (Mt. Washington), the view across the river is nice. (The restraunt up there is upscale).
At the university area, Pitt has a cathedral of learning, has lots of ethnic classrooms. Most museums are there. That was claimed to be one of the tallest building on U.S. campus. Behind the Museums, at Shenley (?) Park, there is a Phipps(?) conservatory, lots of flowers in there. Carnegie Mellon University is within walking distance.
You toddler is too young to enjoy most of this. There is also Kennywood Park (lots of roller coasters etc..) and sandcastle (water park).
Falling water is nice too.
