Kinatic energy is not conserved in collision, and other that mechanical energy, there are some form energy, like deformation, sound, etc. But, Momentum is conserved.
The easiest way to examine this problem is assuming that: m1 = infinity; m2 = small (m1>>m2). When a car hits a train, the forces are equal, but the results are different.
Energy is not conserved!!
