The cheating. I was a grad-student TA for a chemistry class taken mainly by pre-med students, and the cheating was rampant. Kids cheated to get a 98 instead of a 96 — bringing us their graded exams, after having altered their answers, and saying they’d been graded wrong. We had to keep photocopies of a random sample, and caught a lot of them. And TAs sat in on exams only to answer qusetions — because of the honor code, we weren’t allowed to ‘proctor’ — and I saw students cheating all the time. I’d tell them I could see them conferring and they knew they shouldn’t do that, and they’d laugh at me. We weren’t even allowed to report them, because that would constitute proctoring.
I’m guessing that the problem was worst among the pre-professionals — those planning to go to med school, law school, or biz school — because they were worried about getting in. AT least, I hope only a small portion of the student body cheated.
