Q: If we know for sure that we won't get any financial aid from colleges, is there any reason for us to still fill out FAFSA and/or other applications? Is there any drawbacks, or benefits by not applying for financial aids? Thanks a lot.
Answer: Thank you for reaching out to help desk with your questions about applying for financial aid. If you are not going to qualify for need based aid and you do not see your son needing to take out a federal student loan to cover any of the costs then you do not need to complete the financial aid applications. If any of the schools that (my son) is looking at offer merit based scholarships I would also encourage you to double check their websites to make sure they do not require the family to apply for aid as part of their merit process. Most schools do not but every so often I come across one that does like NYU. If the school does then you can complete the application(s) just for that college and not have the information sent to the other schools (my son) is applying to.
