At 12 years old, Jennifer Jeon is already an accomplished violinist.
Jeon has played Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and toured Yucatan, Mexico, playing a number of missionary concerts.
She's also somewhat of a YouTube sensation. One of the videos of her playing has more than 20,000 views.
While many middle schoolers relax on the weekend, Jeon spends each Saturday at the Julliard School, where she is a student in the pre-college division and concert master of the pre-college string ensemble.
Jeon, who only moved to Paramus in 2010, practices three hours every day while still managing to finish her homework and babysit for her younger sister. She's also a member of the Brain Busters club at West Brook.
She first learned music from her mother, Jungjoo Bae, who has a master's degree in piano performance from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. Jeon started playing piano at the age of 5.
One of her mother's piano students who happened to be a violinist gave Jeon lessons in exchange for free lessons from Bae. Jeon has played violin since she was 6.
Bae regularly accompanies Jeon during performances. She recently performed the Tarantella by Sarasate at the West Brook Middle School winter concert, accompanied by her mother.
Jocelyn Gertel, the orchestra director at West Brook, introduced the seventh grader, saying she plays at "a world-class level."
Many 12-year-olds would have been nervous, but Jeon is already a veteran performer.
"They're my classmates, so I know them," she said.
She received a standing ovation.
