When asking for a recommendation, the key word is "favorable"

When asking for a recommendation, the key word is "favorable".  It is best to ask straight if she or he can write a favorable recommendation.  If the person is relucant to write a favorable recommendation, or not willing to write at all, it is best to look for an alternative.  There is not much you can do to force this person to do it in your favor, besides forcing him or her to do it.
