how to improve kids' writing skill

can anyone suggest how to improve kids' writing skill? My son has some trouble to find topic about his jounal everyday. I tried some suggestions such as the events happened that day, but he doesn't like those ideas.

It can be a torture to nagging him to finish his diary every night.
