Two things I tell my kids regularly when they were young, they listen or not is another story:

1. Mistake is your friend. Learn from it.

2. Don't spend energy on things you can't control, especially other people's opinions. Control what you can control.

Just the other day, I mentioned that it is very likely that I was projecting myself, because I myself couldn't control what I could control.
