2% is only the top 1 in a 50-student class. Do you remember who was the top 1 in  the classes other than your own class? Be top 1 among 500 students is something you might remember, and give him a 10 second attention when meet.
2% might make him easy in study compare to average students, but not enough to be outstanding from crowd.
Someone needs to be 2 in one thousand to have other people notice the difference.
