Whether his son goes or not should mostly depends on how his son and the son's girlfriend discuss privately.  The father makes the right decision by sending her a gift at the moment.  If she responses with her appreciation attitude, especially her parents response positively, then I would say his son find a very nice and well rounded young lady - congratulation!
