A person being independent does not mean he/she work alone. That is true for babies, elementary school students, high school students, college students and most adults. Proper guidence from parents is essential for a high school student to learn to do things, including deciding their future career direction, choosing colleges, choosing courses, etc. Having to let the child to follow the parents' suggestions is clearly wrong; it appears most parents from this forum know this. On the other hand, letting the students to do whatever they want to do w/o proper inputs (including choosing the right high school courses) is just as wrong as, if not worse than, forcing a student to follow the parents' decision. It is more likely for a chinese parent to "over-guide" the students, but we cannot go to the other end, making the mistake like many Aerican parents tend to make: under-guding the students. To help the students to be independent is not the excuse of "under-guidence".
my 2 cents.
