Sweet Pay and Perks for Tech Interns in NYC

Some make more than $6,000 a month; tickets to Matilda

脸书和谷歌公司的软件工程师实习月薪为7000美元。两家公司都拒绝透露具体的实习薪水,但他们表示,实习薪水很有竞争力。

MongoDB表示,他们有34个实习工作,收到了5000份申请。博客公司汤博乐(Tumblr)代表说,他们有12个实习工作,收到500份申请。

At the Manhattan headquarters of technology firm MongoDB, college interns are lavished with Broadway tickets, trapeze classes and a tour of the city’s best pizza places. The compensation isn’t bad either: housing stipends plus $16,000 to $18,000 for the summer.

Similar perks and pay have become common among interns in the city’s expanding technology sector, where competition is fierce for the most sophisticated software engineers.

While interns in fashion or film squeak by on minimum wage, some peers with computer science savvy are making more than $6,000 a month and given free housing. That is more than some Wall Street interns, who have long had many of the most coveted internships in the city.

As Silicon Valley companies have set up New York City offices in recent years, computer science students have found New York a growing option for launching careers, said Andrew Burke, head of recruiting at Squarespace, a web publishing platform.

To compete with the lures of the San Francisco Bay Area, he said New York firms have to “keep up, not only in terms of the compensation but the entire package and experience.”

One perk for Squarespace’s five interns in SoHo, who make more than $6,000 monthly: a week of orientation at a beach house in Montauk.

New York City’s tech sector has expanded quickly, amping up its need for staff. It had 66,300 jobs in computer systems design and related services in June, almost double the number a decade ago, according to the state Department of Labor.

A broader count comes from a 2014 report by HR&A Advisors, an economic development advisory firm. It found the city had 291,000 jobs tied to the “tech ecosystem,” a sector growing faster than the city’s employment overall.

At MongoDB, a database vendor near Times Square, the office has ping pong and pool tables, kitchens full of free snacks and scooters for whizzing to meetings. A spokeswoman said its 31 software engineering interns make $38 to $42 an hour.

On a recent morning, several interns said they were excited to be going to the musical “Matilda” that night on the company’s dime. They said they were drawn to the firm’s hip startup vibe, easy access to its leaders and the satisfaction of the work.

Ryan Chipman, who is about to start his senior year at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said he was writing a piece of software expected to become part of MongoDB’s product. “I’m solving really interesting technical problems,” said Mr. Chipman. “That is a good feeling, to be able to contribute.”

Raymond Jacobson, a senior at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, said interns worked on “some of the hottest new features” under development. The perks are “really nice,” he said, “but if people are in this space for the purpose of getting benefits, they wouldn’t be succeeding.”

Merry Mou, also at MIT, said she didn’t feel much stress or pressure to work “crazy” hours. “I might just because I want to,” she said.

A MongoDB spokeswoman said the company saw interns as “the future of our engineering team” and expected to give many of them full-time job offers.

“The Internship,” a 2013 film starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, depicted a far more pressured scene as Google Inc. pitted interns against each other in a brutal contest to land a job. A Google spokeswoman said by email the company is proud of its “unique culture” and the film was a “fun way to share a Hollywood version.”

Tech interns have commanded rising salaries in recent years, said Scott Dobroski, trends analyst at Glassdoor.com, an online job forum where people post their salaries in return for information. Its 2014 report found that nationwide, 19 of the top 25 highest paid internships nationwide were tech companies, with four in oil, gas, energy and utilities.

That list included Facebook Inc. and Google, where software engineering interns averaged roughly $7,000 monthly this year. Representatives for both firms declined to specify interns’ compensation but said it is competitive with the field.

“The war for talent is so fierce in these industries…they will absolutely pay top dollar to make sure they have the best and brightest minds, even while they’re in school,” said Mr. Dobroski.

While companies chase top candidates, it isn’t easy for students to make the cut. About 5,000 applicants vied for 34 intern spots across MongoDB departments, a spokeswoman said. At Tumblr, a blogging platform, a representative said 500 applicants competed for 12 engineering internships.

Many executives and educators are calling for action to increase the pipeline of American students preparing for the most complex tech jobs. Some, such as AT&T Inc., are funding computer science internships at the high school level, including a summer immersion program in New York City run by the nonprofit group “Girls Who Code.”

“Computer science and software skills are increasingly important in our workforce,” said Marissa Shorenstein, president of AT&T for New York. “We see a lot of movement in the direction to educate our students with the skills they need.”
