Somebody posted about kid playing chess the other day. I have a friend whose kid is playing chess. The boy started high school this year (2011). His rating is ~2000. My friend estimated that his son can probably win top 3 in state tournament, but it will be very difficult to win anything at the national level tournament. As many chess parents here know, playing chess is very time consuming and also relies on talent, especially after the 2000 mark. He is not sure whether they should still put efforts on chess or should give it up, as it is too challenging at the national tourment. My kid, who is still young, is also playing chess, pretty good but clearly not a genius. We all have same questions. How will playing chess help a kid to get into a top universities? Will state champion or top 3 medal in a state tournament be helpful at all, or the kid has to get into top 3 at a national tournament? Will one's rating be important? ~2000 rating probably can rank at 30-50 of the same age players (16-18).Will this rating be considered as an achievement? We will appreciate your opinion on this. Thanks in advance.
