女儿的最后一张大学帐单

昨晚收到女儿转发的电子邮件，是卫斯理（Wellesley）学院下学期的账单。这是第七张，也是女儿的最后一张大学帐单了。女儿在大学期间去英国伦敦游学一个学期，那个学期的账单就没有直接给卫斯理学院，而是交给了女儿。

拿到大学账单，第一件事就是查银行户头有没有足够的钱付。还好，用来对付日常开销的支票账户上的钱差不多了，等这个月老爸老妈的工资发下来，刚好够。再看看应急账户（emergency account)，从女儿刚上大学的时候到现在，就少了一个零--从足够应付全家一年的正常开销到现在不够应付两个月的开销。不过，还够那种Money Market账户的最低要求（minimal balance)，不用罚款。

值得庆贺，我们挺过来了。四年一共给大学交了近八万，加上捐款，零用和来回的费用，总的费用应该在九万以下。这四年没买车，没换什么大件的家具；这四年没回国，没有真正全家一起出门度假。但值得欣慰的是这四年，就一年没往雇主赞助的退休账户（相似于401K)里存钱，其他基本保持原样，比我预计的要好。这四年是美国经济下滑，股市低迷的四年，要没有往股市里面投资，我会很遗憾的。

女儿也算懂事。第一年的零花钱全靠老爸老妈，第二年自己挣了一半；第三年全靠自己挣，第四年到目前为止，“太忙没时间花钱”，也不用找老爸老妈开口。老爸给女儿承诺：你明年春季是找工作的时间，衣服一类的添置，job interview需要的费用等等老爸老妈会帮你的。

卫斯理学院不折不扣地保持了助学金的承诺。从第一年的两万多的financial aid package到最后一年，不仅没有减少，还随着学费的增加而多给了将近一万。在女儿上大学前一年我因离开原雇主而多拿了两个多月的工资，还担心过这个多出来的收入会影响将来financial aid。但卫斯理学院计算得清清楚楚。女儿将带着不到一万的学生贷款走出校门，充分体现了卫斯理学院为学生着想的理念。相比州立大学的费用，上卫斯理学院对我们来讲更合算一些。

我们是幸运的。在美国经济最困难的时候，太太和我都只换工作而没有丢工作。对普通工薪阶层的家庭来说，孩子大学的费用能按我计划的完成，让我幸庆。让孩子从父母的羽翼下走进社会，走向自立是我们作父母的责任。太太和我对女儿的这个责任终于完成了。
