Application to UCB is a waste of money

For an OSS, UCB is very expensive and their merit based aid will be very competitive. Is your son a NMSF?

没有啥亮点 or 没有 leadership role will be a big problem for top schools such as S and MIT. 

CMU is a good suggestion.  I would look at more of 10 - 20th schools. 

On the money side, all schools other than HPYS will have poor need-based FA, relatively speaking.
