Your experience with that particular college can likely apply to other institutions as well. The key point here is from the point attending the college, then ALL income will be counted for calculating EFC no matter the money is put into retirement account or not.

The following is from the link provided by the previous post: " Load up on contributions to retirement plans before the base and college years, because assets in those accounts aren't counted in the aid formulas", it is consistent with your experience.
