HMC Grads Among Top Earners
Jul 23, 2009 - Claremont, Calif. -
Students who select a college based on earning potential will find Harvey Mudd College among the top choices, according to a recent survey by PayScale, a site that collects data on salaries for various professions.
HMC was ranked No. 2 in the category "Best Engineering Colleges by Salary Potential," with a starting median salary of $71,000 and a mid-career median salary of $125,000. MIT ranked only slightly higher with $71,100 and $126,000, respectively. Engineering schools showed the best starting salaries, while Ivy League schools had higher mid-career pay. Majors in engineering, science, mathematics and economics yielded both the highest starting median salaries and the highest mid-career median salaries.
"Will you make more money if you go to Harvard or Harvey Mudd?" asked Catherine Rampell, a writer for the New York Times Economix blog. She remarked,
"Well, the median graduate at Harvey Mudd appears to make more money in starting salary than does the median graduate from Harvard (vice versa at mid-career). But of course, the people who choose to go to Harvard over Harvey Mudd, or the other way around, are different students; it would be hard to say that a particular person would make more money going to one instead of the other."
