Character and Habit building are the keys.

For most Chinese Kids here, use faked scaring motivation (like pretend your family are really poor, like you could be end up homeless if you are not do so and so etc,) is not going to work, and is dishonest, therefore, it does more harm than help.

Even it "works" in some rare cases, by "works" I mean, it does motivate a kid to work hard, it probably does damage to kid's mental health: the kid most likely won't have a balanced view of life, he/she would be more material-oriented. He/she would have little appreciation for poem, art, great literature, intellectual curiosity.
