I think parents need to pay attention to every aspects of kid's life. A happy, fun, but shallow kid's life most likely will not be a happy, fun adult's life. For me, to instill a hard working attitude to kids is important.

Many people equal happy, fun with mediocre. We don't want to force our kids, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't expect excellence from them.
