I recall there is a study on number systems in different cultures. Turns out the Chinese number system is the most efficient: in that our numbers are the simplest to remember. For example: 12, is just "10+2" in Chinese, but a complete new word in English. Also, 20, is just "2X10" in Chinese, but again a complete new word in English. It consumes less brain resource for the kids to learn Chinese system than English system.

French is probably the worst. For example, 92 has to be memorized as 2x40+12.
