Of course, I think father absence for a whole year is too much. So I don't think it is a good idea.
Partially disagree --
If kids travel/move, they will experience cultural shock and adjustment of environment. Moving to China is a big change, but I do believe kids can deal with it; especially with mom staying together. I did not know 3 and 5 yr old Chinese kids (in China), but I do bet, on average, they are not meaner than American kids; especially for kids growing up in a good environment. Good environment means with educated, upper-middle/middle class parents.
