The biggest difference between an AP class and a regular class is the way the material is taught. The student could not expect the teacher to explain everything in an AP class so self learning is a must. Most of the children does not use to the concept the first time.
So, I would like to suggest that you let your son start with 1 or 2 AP at 10th grade and then move to 4-5 in 11th and 12th. As long as you have 8 or more AP, I think that is the top of the avergae.
Of couse, the school your son is in may be one of those very top schools that offer post AP classes in 12th grade.
