In my opinion, for most kids learning piano, if they are still interested in playing after 5 years, an upgrade to a $5000 piece (you can buy a low-end baby grand for that sum these days) is sufficient. For those with real talent (that won't occur for one out of a hundred) they deserve a better piece. Even if they lose interest after a few years it's still useful to keep a working piano at home if they turn to other instruments.
Of course if you have the money and the floor space, go for a Steinway. Even a concert upright Steinway sounds superior, believe me.
