Chinese were never really religous. To them the deities are entities one can bargain or fool with. There might be a period when the environment our ancestors lived was still very primitive, that the fear to the uncomprehended elements brought believes more absolute. You can pick up some that from Shi Jing or Qu Yuan. But after Han period the secular power of the emperor became so dominant (and real) the Heaven retreated to the background. The absolute power was enshrined in the person of the Tianzi. This explains that Buddhism only retains lasting power in the minority groups in the perimeter of China (such as Tibet and Mongolia). In the Chinese proper, Buddhism has been adulterated to something else.
