You can play with him first to build the trust. Once you tell him what he needs to do, stay firm with it. Sometimes you need to tell him a reason, but sometimes just tell him he has to follow the direction. Give the warning first when he doesn't do it. If you tell him the second time and he fails to do so, take one of his favorate things away or not allow him to play with it...then he will gradually understand the consequences of not following the order.
