Four people were killed when a man driving the wrong way on U.S. Highway 27 in Weston crashed his car head-on into another vehicle.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Nathan Wine, 27, of Delray Beach, was driving south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 near Interstate 75 when he crashed his Volvo into a Toyota Sequoia that was traveling northbound just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Wine's white Volvo spun off the highway after the impact, landing in the median. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three people inside the Toyota SUV were also killed. The driver was identified as Hermis Ruiz, 67, of Clewiston. The passengers were identified as Daisy Zayas, 62, of Clewiston, and Ines Zayas Pena, 63, of Havana, Cuba.
A fourth passenger, Minerio Ruiz Torres, 69, was airlifted to Broward Health North after he was found wandering around the scene of the crash in a state of shock.
Broward Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said Torres suffered some leg injuries and possible internal injuries.
Only Torres and Ruiz were wearing seat belts.
It is unclear if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The northbound lanes of U.S. 27 were closed for several hours, but they reopened about 3 a.m. Wednesday.
