My kid's school encourages kids (K-3 grade) who are advanced academically to be teacher's assistant to read to other kids and help other kid's math works. It really keeps smart kids busy and challenged. It also gives these smart kid chances to learn leadership skills. Smart academically can put kid in very disadvantaged situation in US. Rising a “whole balanced” kid is what teacher in US believe.
