7 yr old son is bored at school.How to handle it please?

My 7 yr old second grader is doing very well at school and he is way advanced for this level. He used to love school playing with friends but now he says it too boring since every day it's the same thing/regrouping--it's too easy for him. I just went to the conference and the teacher did mention he would 99% qualify for the Gate program. Even then I know they still put gifted kids in the class of teachers who have the GATE certificate with other kids. So it still won't be challenging enough for him. The school he's attending is already the best public school in our area--and the teacher is really nice with him. So I don't know what to do. I try not to let him read too much since his vision dropped drastically in one year. Could you please share your advice please? My older son is the opposite so I have no experience handing this. Thanks
