Sugawara no Michizane

"Sculpture Ten Jin" at Caltech refers to a bronze sculpture of the 9th-century Japanese scholar and statesman Sugawara no Michizane, who was deified as the god of scholarship and learning, Tenjin. The statue, a relatively recent (late 19th century) work, was once part of a prominent Oriental garden before being moved to Caltech, where it is now located in a shaded courtyard near Dabney Hall.
