Let me say say about 推
We have two kids, one is a freshman at Stanford and one is an good junior in a top 50 high school. Let me brag a little by saying I know something about 推.
Yes, we behaved like most of Asian parents - sending kids for piano and chinese drawing, and chinese school when they were young. At the end, I think those efforts are secondary.
The number one thing is to build their drive to be the best at an early age. We did not know how smart our DD is until she entered first grade. We were pleasantly surprised by some of the awards she won at the beginning. Of course we encouraged her to do more. Once she tasted the "sweetness head" of winning, there was not turning back. Positive, positive positive encouragements. They love that and they want more.
Also, I think I did one right thing which was setting a high expectation at very beginning. I have talked to them many times about their goal in life - making a contribution to the human sociaty as a whole. Please don't laught, I did a lot of this type of talking when they are about 10 years old.
If you really want to 推 per academic, I think you should concentrate on reading, not math or other sciences. Read, read, read!!! Both my kids reads a lot. Every wheere we go, they bring a book with them. At yard sale, they buy books. I don't think we ever 推 our kids do additional math or any other additional school work.
Be actively involve in your child's schooling. As I said, if you don't know why your child is getting a C, you are getting a C as a parent. For example, in one of the cases, the teacher could not read our child's hand writting in home works and test so he gave a lower grade. We worked with our child to improve their hand writting skills and the grade was improved. In another case, kid will write the answer without showing the step. We talked to the teacher who insisted students showing steps. Then we help our kid understand what was the teacher's expectation and why showing steps could also help them etc. saying any negative thing when your child getting a B or C is really bad, in my opinion.
Even if your child is a 4.0 student, go talk to GC and/or teacher once in a while. Let them know that you CARE. Let them know you appreciate their efforts to teach and help your kids.
推 your children to make friend with their GC and teachers. I learnt this from our DD. Some of her high school teacher had tears in their eyes when we talked about our DD.
Once our DD asked me to take her to school by a different route because she wanted to buy a cup of coffee from a special shop. Why, because a sub teacher would be leaving after three days and he had one of this coffee in his first sub day. I would like think that coffee gave the teacher one small happy moment. The benefit - many teachers want to write recommendation letter for DD and they must put in amazing words.
well, hope this help.
