is the teacher very young? no experience?

If so, don't listen to her.
My D got the same kind of recommendation when she was 1st grade.
She was good student from pre-K, K. Then suddenly the first grade teacher said ....
We did not follow her.
My D's English was on the very top based on her
second/third/fourth .... grade teachers, except thee first grade.
