We hosted smaller parties when kids were only 3 or 4 years old, and only invited best friends who know each other well (to be more manageable). When my kids were 5, we invited the whole class. Since they were still pre-school kids, most parents stayed for the party instead of leaving the kids alone. I did call/ask around and leave notices to get more exact head counts.
