Hope the third time is a charm

Sorry my previous question is poorly defined. 

Is CMU a great college to consider for a kid (ABC) who is not a competition math kid to have a good experience?  Will they fall into the bottom half of the student body instead of thriving at CMU SCS?

Or is LAC or IVYs better choice for the student?
