Is the place clean? Spacious enough? Safe? Child-friendly? (kid-sized bathroom, toys, furniture etc.) Are their bookcases and shelves neat, orderly and appealing?
Are staff members friendly, enthusiastic? How long have they been working there (hopefully not too short, more experienced preferred)? (Ask the staff’s credentials—what did they do to prepare their staff for the program?) What’s the teacher to kids ratio?
What is their teaching philosophy (OK, OK, it's well-known:discovering learning, but still ask) or what do they do to promote early childhood literacy and mathematics? What about music and other types of artistic skills/talent? (Ask to see a sample lesson plan.) And how do they promote social development? Ask them how they would handle incidents of children’s physical or verbal/relational aggression.
Is it OK for parents to drop by anytime?
Observe if the staff is genuinely interested in children.
