You did the right thing, but maybe for the wrong reason.
It might be the case that your child is not having an emotional connection with you, not reciprocating your care verbally or otherwise.
You need validation for your effort but having a hard time getting it, so you double down, and feeling the strain.
Maybe you should ease up a little, at least don't show it on your face for your child to see.
Have your child help you with chores, so that your efforts get a chance to be appreciated.
Empathy needs to be taught when lacking.
That mother was being irresponsible; she should have thanked you for your concern and the trouble her children have caused you. But she was not to be bothered.
