Seems like a story out of Allice in Wonderland... a man is caught stealing but it's the business owner that gets castigated for having the nerve to stop it. Glad the Gibson family prevailed in court over the kneejerk stupidity of academia.

"Gibson’s Bakery said the liberal arts college had falsely accused it of racism..." ...And a jury agreed and an appellate court confirmed.

Politicians on both sides have paid so much lip service to “saving the small businessman”, yet the deck is stacked against them?.? Imagine what it’s like to put your heart, soul, and hard work, never mind all your money, into a back breaking small business. Imagine going to work at 5 AM and coming home at 10 PM, every day. And then, having to deal with underage idiots trying to pass a fake ID and shoplift wine. Imagine how annoying and frustrating that can be. And imagine having that every day.

Detaining Black shoplifters is racist Being opposed to illegal immigration is racist Police shooting Black suspects who attack them is racist Any policy or system that produces unequal outcomes is racist The new liberal definition of racism doesn’t pass the common sense test and has created an understandable backlash

What would anyone expect from these students? They’re told repeatedly by the squad that the country is racist. Celebrating the bakery today! Let this be a lesson to all who enable theft in the name of social justice. You’re setting a poor example.

I'd be a lot more sympathetic to these progressives if they stopped openly aiding and abetting criminals. Find a better hill to die on, folks.

Good for the bakery. Almost $37 Million isn’t enough though.

The bakery’s side of the story is missing from this piece, as the reporter’s focus is on the college and the settlement. You can find the heartbreaking details in interviews with the owner, who was forced to the brink of bankruptcy by Oberlin’s behavior. Oberlin destroyed this small business in defense of an indefensible campaign libel by its ideologically intoxicated students. An excerpt: “ During the week, my girlfriends come in to have coffee and snacks. We have some locals and people from the surrounding towns who support us, but it’s not enough. Our shelves are bare because there’s no foot traffic anymore, so we don’t bother stocking them. Before, there was a constant stream of people coming into the shop. Now, we might have one or two customers throughout the whole morning. We still sell our whole wheat donuts, and apple fritters, chocolates and candies with homemade caramels, but far fewer of them. If I got the money from the college, I wouldn’t buy a house, or go on vacation, or leave Ohio. I would replace the compressors for the refrigerators and replace the fryers and proofers that we use for our dough. I would pay off the mortgages on my properties that I’ve taken out in the past few years. I’d hire back employees and ramp up production. While the Ohio Supreme Court’s recent decision has made us hopeful, if the money doesn’t come through within the next couple months, I’ll be forced to declare bankruptcy and shut the doors of Gibson’s for good.”
