He is young, time is still on his side.

 

Treat him like a young man as he is, with due respect.  Children can sense what is expected of them readily.

Remind him to be more self-aware.  He should be more aware of his feelings by responding to his feelings more quickly with thoughts that articulate them, and then ask why he felt that way.  The answer he comes up with is a measure of his self-awareness, thus his maturity.  When he reads Genesis, ask him what happened to Adam and Eve when they become self-aware.  Is it a risk worth taking?

He should watch more Westerns.
