Do not nag him,

 

so it does not become a way for him to get your attention.  Yes, he enjoys your attention and seeing you agitated.

Have him do chores, and praise his effort.

Let him know that a person's surrounding is a reflection of what is inside his head.  What's inside of his head, a pigsty?
