Passivity

 

Like most people, he does things because he is forced to do them, by the deadline, or by the consequence of not doing them. So the motivation is fear.

When an action is motivated by fear, it relieves the burden of his responsibility for the outcome. Being responsible for the outcome if he had, on his own volition, wanted to do them produces a bigger fear.

So, it is fear of negative response from others (e.g., the teacher's) versus fear of the self.

Teach him to realize the self by wanting to do the work; there is the self in a job well done, rather than letting others fill that space.  Most people work for others,  a few work for themselves.
