It sounds corny, write a letter to your first-year student.

As a surprise, when we were helping our daughter set up her dorm, we each wrote a little note to our daughter and tugged  it under her pillow. These little notes brought her comfort at the time when she realized that she was in her own. I do not recall what was written, but I do remember that she called us back.
