His perfectionism masks his unwillingness

 

to take responsibility for the outcome.  He wanted to be able to tell himself, if the project turned out to be less than 100%, "Oh, only if I had more time."

Remind him of that he should have the courage to shoulder himself, and his worth is not what others say about him.
