He is only 9,

 

he will grow out of his egocentricity.  It might be helpful to make him realize that other people have feelings, too, that he needs to take into consideration.  Some empathy is a good thing.

If you like him to realize that things are out there that are bigger than himself, get him a copy of the Bible (children's version, mostly allegorical stories.)  He'll find his place in the world sooner.
