They looked but forgot what they were looking for.

It happens all the time when parents ask a child to look for things. Whatever the child is  looking for is in plain view, the child simply  could not pay enough attention to connect the dots.  They all claim they have looked everywhere and every pocket. They did not lie, they simply did not locate what you were  asking them to find.
