I suggest to change it

I don't even buy stuffs for my son now.  They have different views of life. 

He bought his stuff, and I gave him cash as gift.  It is generation gap.  (He told me buy nothign for him except food)

Of course, he would say "thank you" and accpet the gift relatives gave to him due to politeness.  But in reality, only he knows what he wants.
