On memorization

Memory is important for every subject, including Math.  You have to have all kinds of thereoms engraved in your brain so you can use them like second nauture.

But, but, memory does not equal rote memorization.

For every subject, including chemistry, history, Latin--with the right methods and guides, one should be able to memorize without  rote memorziation.  One of the driving forces is interest.   If one cares, one would think through the knowledge many many times, therefore memorization is natural consequence of exploration.
