Again, every kid is different, some kids don't follow rules, they make troubles and that's the nature of personalities. Control freaks intend to force kids grow in their ways and according to their own expectations and paces.

Beating kids could make them follow rules or obey orders but the psychological consequences of being hurt might not be able to evaluated easily. Not till adulthood, people start to talk about child abuse, but of course, people might even thank the "beating" by their parents. But for keeping the emotional damage to the minimum, parents should avoid using physical forms to educate kids, but using more positive ways.

As long as you micro-manage a kid in a positive way, you kid will grow up healthily. Again, the society is made of people with diverse personalitiies and functions, using one single model to raise our Chinese kids should be avoided. We want to see more Chinese lawyers/doctors, or scientists/engineers, but also hopefully see more politicians, or actors/actresses.
